Anonymous asked: I really like to collect rocks, always have been, and I've found that you can find some REALLY gorgeous ones just by watching the ground when you walk around. Sure, they're nothing compared to crystals you can buy.. but if you're low on cash and want to collect it's a great way to start IMO.
Anonymous asked: What advice would you give to someone who wants to start collecting, if you have any?

The most thoughtful gift.
Tonight, out of the blue and for no reason at all, someone very close to me gave me a beautiful piece of Azurite & Malachite. It is seriously so lovely. I will be taking photos soon to share with you all.
I feel loved.

fucksie asked: That diamond post reignited my inner geology-buff; back to my rock collection.
Anonymous asked: Where do you get your minerals from? I want to start collecting but I'm not sure where to get stuff
Day well spent.
I spent today photographing pieces from my mineral collection. I used a lightbox, fancy camera, and pizza (to keep energized). I’m in the process of setting up an online shop! The anticipation is killin me smalls.

laurinor asked: Diamonds are actually pretty cool when you think about how they form. The theory is, because we know they have to form at such extreme pressures and rise to the surface very quickly (or else they will just turn back to shitty graphite before they get to the surface), they shoot up from the mantle super fast in things called kimberlite pipes. It's actually pretty boss. Noone has observed it...
darthzems asked: could you explain why diamonds are weak?
Diamonds are weak.
Despite being a 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, diamonds are weak.
Advice to anyone who may propose to me: Don’t do it with a diamond. How about Tanzanite, Tourmaline, or something uncut, in its more natural state?
(I hope no diamonds were offended by this post)

vicer0y-bubbles-v0n-salamancer asked: what does var. stand for
I accidentally set my laptop background to
a picture of Tanzanite. Why can’t all my mistakes be this fortunate?

Bringing back the barter system.
I am house/dogsitting in exchange for minerals. Hell yes.
I have a little something up my sleeve.

propaedeuticist asked: maybe lunarfossils' specimen has some kinda of agate growth or hematite layer. I've seen both of those minerals coat another botryoidal mineral. Hematite has a thinner slicker sheen or a dusty texture. Agate has a shallow chalky translucency so in person it would be easier to tell if it's either of them.
pilot-of-middle-earth asked: Regarding the question you were asked earlier, about that reddish/brown globular mineral, to me it looks like Hematite (Fe2O3) formed in a hydrothermal mineral vein as quartz is a common mineral also found in mineral veins. Hematite can be found in globular formations, also known as Kidney ore, similar to the small formations in the picture and has a range of colors from Brown, various reds, steel...
