Pyrargyrite from Mexico
“These black crystals of Pyrargyrite have grown in a bed of Amethyst crystals; this pairing provides one of the more beautiful combinations seen in the mineral kingdom. Pyrargyrite, a primary ore of silver, is formed by warm ascending solutions of silver being deposited in the upper levels of silver mines. It is commonly associated with proustite, galena, tetrahedrite, sphalerite, calcite, and quartz. Pyrargyrite is an uncommon minerals; good crystals are rare indeed. Pyrargyrite possess a deep color when formed but frequently tarnishes to a solid-black color when exposed to sunlight for a long period of time…. This black-and-lavender specimen was found about 1870 at the century-old Valencia Silver Mine near Guanajuato, Mexico”.
